Kitty Carlisle Hart, One of the Nation's Most Visible and ...

Kitty Carlisle Hart's intellectual curiosity, iron constitution and formidable personal charm were the tools with which she created a life and a career that were rich in variety and accomplishment. Trained as a singer and actress in Europe and New York, Hart first made her mark in New York in 1932, as the star of an abridged version of the musical Rio Rita that shared the bill with movies at Manhattan's Capitol Theater and later toured. Good notices as Orlofsky in Champagne Sec, a 1933 Broadway adaptation of Die Fledermaus, won her the attention of Hollywood, where her films included Murder at the Vanities, She Loves Me Not, Here Is My Heart and — most famously — A Night at the Opera, in which she and Allan Jones provided the love interest as the Marx Brothers wreaked havoc on a performance of Il Trovatore.
